In-Wall Cables: Bringing you up to Code

We are frequently asked for guidance on installing In-Wall Cable in a kitchen for low voltage LED lighting systems. In-Wiring is a way to achieve a cleaner looking installation and sometimes a downright necessity. Considering that in-wall wiring is usually one of the first step of a remodel, what cable to use and when to use it are great scenarios to know when preparing for the kitchen under cabinet lighting phase. Although this step is commonly completed by your contractor, a little background knowledge goes a long way!

When would I use In-Wall Wiring?

One of the primary places you will use In-Wall Wiring is to power separate sections of a kitchen from one transformer when there is not continuous run of cabinets. A galley style kitchen is one of the best examples of this: Rather than having a two Dimmable Transformers (one on each side), In-Wall cable can power both sides in sync from a single Transformer by running In-Wall Cable to each bank of cabinets.

What Type of In-Wall Cable should I Use?

You can purchase custom length In-Wall rated cables directly from Inspired LED that are ready to install. Another option is to purchase bulk lengths of In-Wall Cable from us and terminate the end with a Screw Terminal onsite. This is a great open ended solution if you are unsure on what length to choose or have multiple runs to make where custom cables would get expensive. We offer 18AWG Class 2 cable at a competitive price which we have found is the ideal cable to work with. You can also source this type of cable at your local hardware store or online. In order to fit into our Screw Terminal connector and conform to national electrical safety standards, you will look for 14AWG-20AWG Class 2 or higher cable. This cable is commonly sold as In-Wall Speaker Wire or 2 Conductor Thermostat Wire.

What is the difference between In-Wall Cable and Interconnect Cables?

Interconnect cables are unshielded wire to be used as “jumper” to connect one LED component to another without going inside the wall, either through, up, over or under the cabinets. In-Wall Cable has fire resistant qualities that allow it to be installed behind the drywall while staying in line with national safety standards and make sure your low voltage system LED Lighting systems is inspection ready.
